A Bunion is a bone like protrusion on the outside of the joint at the base of the big toe.
Symptoms:
- Appearance of a bump on the outside of the big toe
- Inflammation, pain, and/or swelling of the joint at the base of the big toe
- Corns
- Painful movement of the big toe
Causes:
- Foot injury
- Congenital deformity
- Inherited weakness of the toe joints
- Wearing shoes that are too tight or that restrict the toes
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Inflammatory joint disease
- Arthritis
Treatment:
- Apply a bunion pad, available at pharmacies and other retail locations
- Taping the foot to help keep it in a normal position
- Apply ice to the inflamed or painful area several times per day
- Wear shoes that are wide at the toes and instep
- Anti-inflammatory drugs
- Cortisone injections
- Surgery to remove the bunion and restore normal alignment to the foot
