CUBITAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Cubital tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the ulnar nerve which is located behind the funny bone (medial epicondyle).  When you bend your elbow it causes the ulnar nerve to stretch and rub against the funny bone. This causes irritation and may result in permanent damage to the nerve.

Symptoms:

- Numbness or tingling in the pinky and ring fingers

- Weakness of the muscles in the hand or forearm

- Pain in the hand or forearm

Causes:

- Sitting with the elbow bent for prolonged periods of time

- Sleeping with the elbow bent and/or the arms raised

Treatment:

- Non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medications

- A brace may be worn while sleeping to prevent bending of the elbow

- Avoid sitting with your elbow bent for prolonged periods of time

- Physical therapy

- Surgery may be necessary if conservative treatment fails
