Such a Pain in the Neck

Arthritis, poor posture, and injuries can be a pain in the neck, literally. Your neck is the top portion of the spine, called the cervical. This area of the spine is made up of discs, nerves, muscles, ligaments, and seven small vertebrae. The complexity of these elements in the neck allows it to bend, swivel, and have as much flexibility as it does.

Common causes of neck pain and injury include:

Muscle Strain — Neck muscles become fatigued and strained from poor posture for a length of time.

Arthritis — Over time, neck joints, like other areas of the body, can deteriorate from wear and tear.

Disc Disorders — Discs can herniate and irritate the nerves and muscles, causing pain.

Injury — Automobile collisions and athletic injuries can cause whiplash, which stretches the soft tissues of the neck past their limits.
